I'm not sure where the month has gone and  apologies

 for the slowness in getting the latest lot of photos up!

SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 2014

 This is Monte Nassar from Toronto, Canada. She was travelling on a 

tour bus to Paihia, which stopped at The Town Basin for a  break.

 Visitors from Auckland.

 Elly, in the grey cardigan, is one of the tapestry hostesses. 

She bought her sister-in-law Jackie Boeyen, from Nelson and daughter 

Tayler to see the tapestry and both were keen to do some work on it.

Tayler and her mum came up for the Colgate Games Athletics Meet.

 and really enjoyed have a go weaving.

 weaving skills on the mini-looms.

SUNDAY 12 JANUARY 2014

 Jill (left) was the Tapestry Hostess for the day.

 Margaret Rawsley a repeat visitor from Auckland,
 has a daughter who lives here in Whangarei.
Margaret said she will be coming up in three weeks 

time so will be back to do some more weaving
then, as she really enjoys it

 Naoko shows Susan Mowatt-Wilson how the weaving
is done while her friend, Noeline looks on.

 Susan is a local and lives in Maunu...

 Noeline said she used to live in Whangarei and 

was enjoying visiting over the summer period

 Marie, in the yellow top said she was up in Northland 

on holiday camping at the beach with her husband.

This is Clare from Otorohanga She told me she was 9
 years old and was visiting Whangarei (with her mum)
for the Colgate Games Weekend.

 The Jones family: they live in Owhiwa Road, Mt Tiger, Whangarei.

 Eila-Rose,10 has been in to do some weaving before 

so she showed her brother Campbell, 13 how to do it.

 It's so nice to see a family out  spending some time together.

 building beside the boat. The masts are up too!

Lots of holidaying visitors have being stopping by

 to see the Whangarei Community Tapestry.

This is Fiona Mayhill from Beachlands, in Auckland

 

Fiona and Evelyn Dodds (her Mum) has been visiting 

over Christmas/New Year and lives in Hertfordshire, U.K.

 Rosemary (left) from Dargaville is a Creative Fibre member 

and comes over twice a month to work on the tapestry. 

 Naoko has been working on the boat masts and posts.

 Judy Colley (seated) is explaining how to use her 

phone camera to her friend, John. Meanwhile, John's wife 

Collen takes photos of her friend and her husband.

 Judy is visiting Whangarei from  from Feilding, Manawatu

John worked on the black and white checkered border

 way back in April 2013 when we commenced the 

Tapestry Project. It was great to see him back again! 

The first Saturday (Jan 4) of 2014

Happy New Year to you all!

Over the holiday season we have had lots of "out-of-townees" passing through Whangarei and calling in at the Town Basin for a pit-stop or overnight stay in the area.

 Rose Arlidge is from Ngatea, Thames.

 The "Winterless North" as we are known (to Southerners) brought her up here.

 Beverley, our Tapestry Master chats to visitors about the community project.

She has a wealth of knowledge about weaving, dyeing and tapestry-making. 

 Naoko, our most regular volunteer hostess, watches as

 Elise and Troy Friedman, from Auckland, work on the tapestry.

 Elise is 14 and Troy her brother is 20. 

 They are American Kiwis and have been living in 

Auckland with their mother for a couple of years.

 Troy is returning to the States soon to attend University there.

The boat is done!

 This is a close-up photo of the painting. 

I'm assuming the black outline will be worked later.

 The "I" is nearly half done. All that shading is quite tricky work by the way!

 ..the black and white checkered border has nearly disappeared! It's amazing how many people ask where "the rest" of the tapestry (bottom border) has gone. Some think we've cut it off. We show them the back so they have a better understanding of how we are doing the tapestry.

Finally, this is Russell. He is Naoko's husband and our coffee provider LOL!

The last weekend of 2013

Well..that should teach me to leave my record book at home and trust not to loose little pieces of paper! Sadly, I have misplaced the information of a couple of families that called in to see what was happening with The Tapestry Project. I do hope it turns up and apologies to those in the photos I'm unable to name at this time...please forgive me!

I do recall this little one being called Charlotte.

She cried (and ran to her mum) when I asked her to smile for the camera. I'm so sorry Charlottle!

...and this is Charlotte's big sister.

Again, another family I have misplaced the details of.

Mum and Dad help their children to weave on the mini-looms.

And I know this is Esther.

 She was telling me she could write her name "all by herself"

 ...I thought that was a great achievement!

Brenda - from Snells Beach, Warkworth.

 Brenda is up in Whangarei camping over the Holiday Break.

 Ken Barber with his daughter, Janet from Auckland, who is visiting her dad

 Ken is a "local" and lives at Falls Estate in Tikipunga.

 Janet with her husband, Hubert Schulte.

 We had Beverley Compter's daughter Patricia and family call in to see the tapestry.

Beverley is our Tapestry Master and dyes ALL the wool by hand.

 Patricia and her husband, Gregor (in background) 

live in Awawhata near Piha, Auckland. Patricia and family 

have come North to visit "Nana" for Christmas/New Year.

This is Katie Hindle from Nelson

Katie is in Whangarei visiting family for Christmas as well.

She has previously done some weaving back home in Nelson.

Mrs Margaret Mead, from Kamo. She is 94 

years young and still lives in her own home.

Margaret is a longtime member of Creative Fibre 

Spinners and Weavers Guild. She has lived in Whangarei for 40 years 

and has 3 children, 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
